“The Burning Witch” #1, by Delemhach

I loved the first series of books, with Finlay. And when we made the switch to his daughter I was like, ok, I'll give her a chance.

Finlay was fun. He caused trouble, but it worked.

Katarina is not funny. When she causes trouble it's because she's a spoiled brat with no regard as to how her actions affect those she cares about. She behaves badly, and then blames others because of how they reacted to her behavior. This is abuse.

I keep hoping that she will mature. I don't think that I can wade through two more books with her acting the way she does. I honestly admire assertive women who stand up for themselves, but that's not what Kat does. She's just a bully.

The book is FILLED with amazing secondary characters. Pleasant, interesting, humorous, courageous, disciplined people who are only there for Kat to treat like crap. Even the villians are better behaved than she is. They act out of concern for their nation and culture. She acts out of childish pique. If she's uncomfortable, bored or finds someone irritating she loses all control and treats those around her badly.

Which is a real shame because otherwise this is a GREAT book. Troivackia is a great place. Brendan Devark is an honorable king and loving husband. His wife Alina is a woman of courage and compassion. Her brother, Eric Reyes is a troubled hero who is walking a difficult path to recovery. The people of Troivackia are proud of their land, and with good reeason.

What a shame that in such a great book it is so difficult to like the main character.

I look forward to the next book in the series. I have faith that Kat will be able to grow up and quit being such a brat.

Read every day and read for fun!
